This Month's Intro - November

The Language of Authentic Living-Psalms

It's hard enough to grasp the concept of inspiration, with God using a human author to disclose the message He wants us to understand. But the Book of Psalms adds another wrinkle to an intricate communication process. In this ancient and profound poetry, God has inspired a human author to compose songs for us to sing back to Him!

But God didn't just design the Psalms to glorify Himself—He designed us to glorify Him. It is our purpose to bring God glory. So the Psalms don't just teach us how to praise, they teach us how to live.

This month in Today in the Word, we'll be studying the Psalms with an eye toward their poetic blueprint for the Christian life. We will join in choruses of praise and glory and echo prayers for forgiveness and comfort. Most important, we will orient our hearts to an attitude of utmost worship for our Creator, Savior, and King. Generations before the birth of Jesus, many psalms proclaim His coming. Thousands of years later, we can rejoice in His victory!

Once again we thank you for using Today in the Word for your personal study of the Word of God. May this issue help bring you joy and direction this month and beyond.

Bible iconIn 1529, as Martin Luther experienced extreme opposition to his efforts to bring reform into the church, he drew particular encouragement from Psalm 46. Because Luther understood the power of music and song, he used the words and images from this psalm to write his most famous hymn, “Ein feste burg ist unser Gott.” In 1853, Frederic Hedge translated this hymn into English as “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” During Luther's day, this hymn was immediately popular, and it remains a favorite of many Christians to this day.
